Existing services of psychiatric rehabilitation at NIMHANS South Campus Sakalwara (NSCS)
NIMHANS South Campus Sakalwara is situated in a picturesque 13.5 acres site near Sakalwara village, 18 km away from NIMHANS Bengaluru. It was formally inaugurated in December 1976 by Dr. Karan Singh, the then Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare.
From September 2022, a total of 103 persons with mental health conditions have been admitted at the NSCS and 55 persons have been rehabilitated (family reintegration, vocational reintegration, advanced medical care, supported accommodation), fostering long-term recovery and societal integration for individuals with mental illness.
The facility at Sakalwara offers a range of psychiatric rehabilitation services tailored to meet the diverse needs of its residents, including:

Proposal for funding day care services at NSCS:

We propose the following activities for day care at Sakalwara (n=60 at any point of time) besides the existing art and crafts, computer, tailoring, horticulture-based activities:

Fitness Routine and Sports Habit (FRESH) for mind initiative.
The available space in Sakalwara can be used to engage in group sports, indoor games, gymnasium and horticulture activities. We propose to procure sports equipment, gym equipment, horticulture equipment and treadmill for this purpose.

2. Handloom weaving as a therapeutic activity
Weaving and spinning can have therapeutic benefits in individuals with mental health conditions besides being an income generating activity. Weaving requires looms, charkhas and yarns for the purpose of the activity.

3. T-shirt branding:
(Starting a new occupational activity) is crucial for any daycare intended for the psychiatric rehabilitation of persons with mental disorders.
Budget: INR 1.5 lakhs

4. Computer based cognitive remediation activity
The introduction of computer-based cognitive remediation at Sakalwara, the remediation program can significantly enhance functional outcomes, facilitating improvements in social interaction, vocational readiness, and the capacity for independent living

5. Relaxation and mindfulness-based tools
Such interventions are particularly beneficial for fostering calmness, attention, and self-awareness.

6. Packaging of pulses like Ragi Powder, Dal, dry fruits, groundnuts and marketing in the NIMHANS, Sakalawara outlets and NGO Network.

7. Transport for daycare
there is no regular public transport available to Sakalwara.

Two multidisciplinary trainers (peers) to coordinate the activities @INR 25000/month for two years.
